Sara Granér has her artistic base in comics and satire. Her distinctive mythical creatures try to tackle the absurdities of existence in an artistic universe that draws inspiration from underground comics, art brut, surrealism, and naivism.
Granér’s latest book, Den sjunde vännen, was published in 2022. In the book, the stories move in and out of the body, out into the quiet cosmos, and back to the first mammals, to a time before language. We encounter collapsed civilizations, the prison industry, archaeological excavations, and the experience of being completely alone in one’s species.
Granér is diversely inspired by philosophy, history, religion, politics, and language. Her works often open up to the absurd, dark, and suggestive, while also highlighting the humorous and beautiful aspects of people and the world. The images and comics are often humorous but also allow for melancholy and sorrow. Granér balances on the edge between the beautiful and the ugly, the wise and the foolish.
